The Bowenvale Valley Track begins at the end of Bowenvale Ave in Cashmere. This moderate valley walk takes you up gravel mountain bike tracks, through bush and tussock, and on to Victoria Park. There are other walking options here too: you can head for Summit Road or take the Hidden Valley Track. See below for links to more info on these.
Park at the end of Bowenvale Ave, off Centaurus Road, and walk up the multi-purpose (shared with mountain bikes and the odd 4WD)track. Signage describes the walk to Victoria Park as 45 minutes (one-way). The gradient is a moderate uphill climb, with the odd stile to climb and cattle-stop to cross. When we visited there was a port-a-loo in Bowenvale Ave, which was handy but I’m not sure if it’s there for the public or road workers!
We did this walk on a HOT day without kids but didn’t have time to make it all the way to Victoria Park, so this post is TBC….! Also, the turn-off to take you up to Victoria Park (rather than continuing on the Bowenvale Valley Track) didn’t seem to be sign-posted so keep an eye out for a steepish climb to your right to keep you headed in the right direction.
With younger children, a good option could be to all start at the top of the walk (Victoria Park) and just walk back down the valley (if you can work out transport). Keep an eye out for Kereru.
For another walk to try here, read about the Hidden Valley track on Stuff (Hidden Gems).
We did this walk in February 2017 (summer).
