We parked in Oxford Terrace (off Fitzgerald Ave near Pomeroy’s) and set off along a new post-quake walk/cycle way on Fitzgerald Ave. This stretch is OK for scooters and buggies. We saw some interesting bird life, and the colours of the trees were stunning in the late afternoon sun.
We veered left into Cambridge Terrace, which took us on to Barbadoes Street Cemetery. This is Christchurch’s oldest cemetery with the first recorded burial in 1851.
We kept walking down to the Barbadoes – Oxford Terrace Bridge where we began our loop back through the Red Zone. We passed the pile of rubble that was the Holiday Inn (lots of diggers still stationed there), an historic pump house (see pic below), and large sections of land that were once residential. Very few cars come along here and the paths and roads are pretty rough – we carried the scooter for quite some way!
We did this walk in May 2015 (autumn).
