Bubbling springs and an amazing playground! Styx River Esplanade Reserve is a hidden treasure located on the north side of the Redwood Springs subdivision. Follow the stony path west from the playground (5 mins) and you’ll be treated to the Styx River’s bubbling springs. A feature has been made of the 3 metre-wide pond, with tiered seating and a sculptural canopy depicting flax fronds waving in the wind. From here you can also see the old railway bridge that crosses the Styx River, and there’s plenty of birdlife around.
Back at the playground there’s a wide range of play equipment that’s well incorporated into the natural environment of the reserve. There’s a double flying fox so you can race a friend, a stony bike track and a smooth track that surrounds the playground, a cool bridge, picnic tables and more. Note that there aren’t any toilets, and there’s not a car park.
We visited Styx River Esplanade Reserve in January 2017 (summer).
